Stephen Lacey was born in England in 1957, and educated at Trinity College, Oxford. While at university, he read Modern Languages and developed a consuming interest in gardening. After three years as an investment surveyor in London, Stephen Lacey decided to make gardening his career. He now lives in Oxford.

Allen Lacy taught philosophy at Stockton College in New Jersey. His next book was The Garden in Autumn.
