Erskine Childers

Erskine Childers was an Irish writer and political figure who had served loyally as an artilleryman during the Boer War and in the British Navy during WWI, but vehemently turned his support to the Irish Home Rule movement, smuggling arms to Ireland in his sailing yacht, Asgard. A skilled yachtsman, he, like his character Arthur Davies, was fond of exploring obscure island coasts and well respected for his sailing, as well as his flying, acumen. He refused to accept the proposed compromise of 1921, returned to Ireland to harry the British and soldiers of the free state, was arrested in his ancestral home and was executed by firing squad in 1922 as a traitor to the British Empire.
