Erskine Childers was a British-born Irish writer and political figure who served as an artilleryman during the Boer War and in the British Navy during World War I. After the war, he vehemently turned his support to the Irish Home Rule movement, smuggling arms to Ireland in his sailing yacht, Asgard. He was later executed by the authorities of the Irish Free State.
